There is no single protocol that defines IoT. And maybe that has always been the problem 🔥

Over the years the industry converged around excellent technologies like MQTT, CoAP or HTTP, each optimized for a different task. But as systems grow, teams often end up stitching protocols together: one for telemetry, another for control, another for OTA, another for remote access, another for streaming. It works. Until the seams become operational cost.

After nearly a decade running this architecture in production inside Thinger.io, we decided to formally publish the protocol behind it:

👉🏻 IOTMP, has now been submitted as an Internet-Draft at the IETF. Instead of multiplying connections and protocols, IOTMP explores a different idea: multiple communication flows multiplexed over a single persistent session. Telemetry, RPC, OTA, remote shell, tunneling and streaming — all over one connection.
