The next wave of eCommerce is not about better websites. It is about whether AI agents can shop your store on behalf of your customers.

In January, Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol at NRF. Shopify rolled out Agentic Storefronts to millions of merchants. Amazon just replaced Rufus with a full AI shopping agent available to 300 million customers. And OpenAI built checkout directly into ChatGPT.

The data is moving fast:

  • AI-driven orders on Shopify grew 15x between January 2025 and January 2026
  • AI platforms are projected to drive $20.9 billion in retail spending this year
  • McKinsey estimates agentic commerce could redirect $3-5 trillion in global retail spend by 2030
  • 70% of customer service interactions will be handled without human involvement by end of 2026

The shift changes what matters competitively. AI agents do not evaluate hero images or checkout UX. They parse structured data: product attributes, pricing, inventory availability, shipping speed, and return policies. Delivery performance is no longer just a post-purchase metric - it is a pre-purchase ranking signal that determines whether an agent selects your store at all. The merchants treating this as a data and operations challenge — not just a marketing one - will be the ones AI agents choose to transact with.

We wrote a full breakdown of who is building what, where the operational impact is deepest, and what merchants should be doing now.
