Yet, the moment we sit down, we are immediately met with a friction point disguised as technology: The QR Code Menu.

Suddenly, a ritual that used to start with a conversation—sharing a physical menu, pointing at dishes, and discussing what looks good—starts with everyone staring silently at their individual smartphone screens. We pull out our phones to disconnect from our day, but instead, we open the door to email notifications, texts, and a tiny, glowing distraction right next to our silverware.

I recently spent time in Munich, Germany, and noticed something refreshingly intentional about their dining culture. From traditional beer halls to modern bistros, the paper menu is king. Zero QR codes. They haven’t skipped a beat on efficiency, but they prioritize the atmosphere. The physical menu acts as an anchor for the table. It triggers interaction. It encourages you to ask your server for recommendations. It keeps the phone in the pocket and the focus on the moment.
